F-Ogust (As far as I know, Eric and I originated it) ------- Ogust (original): The Ogust structure is used by responder to discover what partner's hand and suit looks like when opener opens a weak two. Responder uses 2NT to ask for a description. Opener's rebids are: 3C bad hand (lower half of range usually 5-7), bad suit (good suit includes 2 of the top 3) 3D bad hand, good suit 3H good hand, bad suit 3S good hand, good suit 3NT all top three honors (thus good hand) Feature (original): Feature is used by responder to discover 1) whether partner is weak or strong and 2) if partner has a stopper that is needed in a suit. Responder uses 2NT to ask, and opener responds: 3preempted suit no feature OR weak hand (about 5-7) 3new suit good hand with an A or K in suit bid 3NT all top three honors Ideas for F-Ogust: In general, Ogust is better than Feature, since most opponents will now know where the Feature is and will usually try to "kill" it by leading that suit. Ogust leaves the opponents guessing as to which suit to lead. But sometimes you need to know about a feature rather than generalities. F-Ogust combines the two. F-Ogust: over a weak two (for below I am using the range 5-10) 2NT by responder is Ogust, responses are as above in steps 3C, 3D, 3H, 3S and 3NT (all top 3) 3C by responder is Feature, responses are similar to above: 3preempted suit no feature OR weak hand (about 5-7) 3new suit good hand with an A or K in suit bid 3NT _club_ feature (New) 4preempted suit all top three honors over interference after the ask: over Ogust 2NT: "ROPI DOPI": (re)double with bad hand, bad suit pass with bad hand, good suit step responses with original 3H,3S and 3NT bids over Feature 3C: weak hand: pass good hand: bid feature Some "nuances" of F-Ogust: Ogust: Useful as a game or slam probe in the preempted suit or NT. Leaves the opponents guessing at where the opener's points are. 2NT then a new suit is a cue bid (responder is now looking for a feature)--- this should be game-forcing. Feature: Useful in finding a needed stopper for game of the suit or 3NT; however, people generally quickly "kill" off the feature. Very useful in finding a needed stopper for game or slam in responder's OWN suit. 3C then a new suit is showing that suit and is FORCING. Other ideas/questions: Competition: If 2NT and 3C can still be used after interference, then they are still F-Ogust. 3D and up: what do they mean? Are they forcing or not? Playing RONF (raise is the only non-forcing bid), they are forcing, but not playing RONF they probably show a good suit and an opening hand 3D?: IF you were a real convention freak you might also want to use this as an artificial bid. I have an _idea_ on what this could be used as: Game-forcing Feature (tm :). Responder has a game-forcing hand (about 20+ points) and wants to know about a feature whether OR not partner is strong or weak (ie partner MUST show bid a feature). 3NT by opener would show a diamond feature and a jump by opener in the preempted suit would show a solid suit. So, the responses by opener to 3D are: 3preempted suit absolutely no feature unless its that suit 3new suit feature in the suit (weak or strong) 3NT diamond feature 4C club feature 4D,4H,4S solid suit (AKQ sixth or AK seventh) 4NT by responder is Blackwood (except over 4C--- to play; 4D is then Blackwood?). All new suit responses are forcing. As a preempted hand you aren't expected to have 4 card support, so raising with 3 or even 2 is allowed.
